Overview

Dolomite is a common carbonate mineral and rock, best known for its pale, pearly colors and its presence in sedimentary formations worldwide. Named after the French mineralogist Déodat de Dolomieu, it forms beautiful rhombohedral crystals and often appears alongside calcite, making it an important rock-forming mineral. In both geology and the metaphysical community, dolomite is valued for its stabilizing energy, gentle support, and grounding influence.

Physical Properties

  • Chemical Formula: CaMg(CO₃)₂ (Calcium Magnesium Carbonate)
  • Color: White, colorless, pink, gray, brown, yellow, green, even black (often pastel or earthy in tone)
  • Hardness: 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale
  • Crystal System: Trigonal (rhombohedral crystals are common)
  • Luster: Vitreous to pearly
  • Transparency: Transparent to translucent
  • Common Sources: Worldwide—especially in Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, United States (Missouri, New York), Brazil, India

Historical & Industrial Significance

Dolomite was first described in the 18th century in the Dolomite Alps of northern Italy. It is used extensively as a building and ornamental stone, in cement and concrete production, and as a source of magnesium oxide for industry. Its unique chemistry also makes it valuable in environmental applications, such as water purification and soil treatment.

Metaphysical Properties

Dolomite is cherished in the metaphysical world as a gentle and balancing stone. It is said to encourage stability, patience, and an appreciation for small blessings. Dolomite’s soft energy soothes stress, aligns the subtle bodies, and fosters a deep sense of calm and centeredness.
